Neck discomfort is a frequent ailment that has several potential causes. It will impact the majority of individuals at some time in their life.

Usually, neck discomfort resolves on its own within a few days. Rarely does it indicate something more serious.

What are the symptoms of neck pain?

Often, neck discomfort travels from the neck to the shoulders or upper back. It frequently causes headaches. Long periods spent with your head in one posture, such as at a computer, may exacerbate the discomfort.

Neck discomfort may sometimes be accompanied by muscular stiffness or spasms. You may also have difficulty moving your head.

If you have a neck injury, you may also be suffering from:

  • dizziness
  • nausea
  • tingling sensations or numbness
  • a change in your eyesight or hearing difficulties
  • weakness
  • difficulty in concentrating
  • trouble swallowing (dysphagia)

What are the causes of neck pain?

The common causes of neck pain include:

  • Wrong stance (the way your body is positioned when standing or sitting)
  • Sleeping in an uncomfortable posture causes muscular tension
  • Muscular strains and whiplash are examples of injuries
  • Extended exposure to a desktop or portable computer
  • A slipped spinal disc (herniated disc)
  • Wear and tear in the bones of the neck is a typical consequence of the ageing wear and strain of the spinal discs (cervical spondylosis). This is a typical aspect of ageing as well.

Among the uncommon reasons for neck pain are:

  • injury to the vertebrae, spinal cord, or neck nerves; a compressed nerve; (cervical radiculopathy)
  • a contamination
  • skeletal damage or fractures caused by osteoporosis
  • cancer
  • meningitis arthritis

When do I need to see my doctor?

Observe a physician if:

  • The ache is terrible
  • The suffering is increasing
  • If the discomfort persists for over a week, you may have a fever, sweats, or chills.
  • Your arms or legs are experiencing numbness, tingling, or pins & needles.
  • You suffer from arm or leg weakness.
  • You begin to experience bladder or bowel problems.

How do you treat neck pain?

Most neck discomfort is most effectively treated by:

  • Move your neck as much as possible
  • Be active
  • Modify any activities that may be giving you discomfort

You may also use hot or ice packs to the neck to alleviate stiffness and soreness.

Ask your physician or chemist which over-the-counter pain relievers they prescribe. They may recommend a topical analgesic anti-inflammatory cream or gel.

Neck pain can be alleviated temporarily by manipulation or massage. Other than that, physical treatments for neck pain in Singapore include physiotherapy, chiropractic, osteopathy, and acupuncture.

It may be beneficial to rest your neck initially, but only for a little while. Muscles will get stiffer if they are not used, and it will take longer for the discomfort to subside. The neck muscles should be gradually stretched. Your doctor or physiotherapist may instruct you on how to do this safely and gently.

Your doctor will explore the reason for your neck pain if it persists. Infrequently, injections of corticosteroids or surgery are used to address chronic, severe neck discomfort.
